Kung Hei Fat Choy!
Food Symbolism
Most of the dishes served during Lunar New Year (also known as Spring Festival) are symbolic of something positive and hopeful.
- Chicken and fish, for example, symbolize happiness and prosperity--especially when served whole.
- Dishes made with oranges represent wealth and good fortune because they are China's most plentiful fruit.
- Noodles represent longevity: therefore, they should never be cut!
- Duck symbolizes fidelity, while eggs signify fertility.
- Bean curd or tofu, however, is avoided because its white color suggests death and misfortune.
Dishes are also chosen based on homonyms--words that either are spelled the same or sound the same as other words. Fish (yu) is served because it sounds similar to the Chinese word for plenty; whole fish represents abundance. Turnips are cooked because their name (cai tou) also means "good luck

Gastroenteritis - amoebiasis
Gastroenteritis - amoebiasis
Gastroenteritis (gastro) can be problem for travellers to countries with poor sanitation. Amoebiasis, a type of gastro, is a cause of diarrhoea among travellers to developing countries. It is caused by a parasite known as Entamoeba histolytica that infects the bowel. Amoebiasis most commonly affects young to middle-aged adults.
Diarrhoea is one of the most common symptoms
In addition to diarrhoea (which may contain blood) signs and symptoms include:
- Stomach cramps
- Fever.
After you are infected with amoebiasis it may take days, months or years before you become ill. However, the illness usually develops two to four weeks after infection.
How amoebiasis is spread
Amoebiasis occurs when the parasites are taken in by mouth. People with amoebiasis have Entamoeba hisolytica parasites in their faeces. The infection can spread when infected people do not dispose of their faeces in a sanitary manner or do not wash their hands properly after going to the toilet. Contaminated hands can then spread the parasites to food that may be eaten by other people and surfaces that may be touched by other people. Hands can also become contaminated when changing the nappies of an infected infant. Amoebiasis can also be spread by:
- Drinking contaminated water
- Eating contaminated raw vegetables and fruit
- Unprotected oral-anal sexual contact.
Some people carry the parasite in their faeces without having symptoms, but they can still pass the disease on to other people.
If you develop gastroenteritis
If you develop gastro after returning home from overseas, you should contact your doctor. The doctor will arrange for a stool (faeces) sample to be tested. If the results show that you have amoebiasis, the doctor will provide appropriate advice and treatment.
You may need to take time off work
You will need to take time off work until the symptoms stop if you are a:
- Food handler
- Childcare worker
- Health worker.
Preventing the spread of amoebiasis
Around the home
To help prevent the spread of amoebiasis:
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap and hot running water for at least 10 seconds after using the toilet or changing a nappy.
- Clean bathrooms and toilets often. Pay particular attention to toilet seats and taps.
- Avoid sharing towels or face washers.
Food handlers should ensure:
- Hands are thoroughly washed before touching food. Use paper towel or an air dryer to dry hands.
- Raw vegetables are thoroughly washed and cooked.
- The internal temperature of reheated food reaches at least 75 degrees Celsius.
- Microwaves are used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
When visiting developing countries you should:
- Avoid eating uncooked foods, particularly vegetables and fruit which cannot be peeled before eating.
- Drink only packaged drinks, boiled water or chlorinated and filtered water.
- Avoid drinks containing ice.
- Remember, ‘cook it, peel it or leave it’.

TIPS
With 3 kids and husband (he acts like the panganay…gets nyo?), a house to maintain, working in the clinic from 9am to 7pm I really need to do some arrangements with myself to make life more easier and it works…here are my tips:
- WAKE UP EARLY - I wake up at 4 am prepare breakfast, baon for recess and lunch for Bianca and Kenneth (be sure to plan the menu with them)…then I sterilize Athenas bottles I do 2 cycles since we are out for the whole day…I can also do my blogging and postings since the computer is all mine…sef still asleepJ .
- CLEAN 1 PART OF THE HOUSE A DAY – I don’t count the bathroom…it should be cleaned everyday…I am always the last one to take a bath so that the bathroom would be squeaky clean when we arrive at night…hay naku oc ako pag dating sa paglilinis… and love what you do so that it will not be a burden…and try to be patient picking up toys for when the kids grow older youre going to miss those clutters.
- DELEGATE TASKS TO YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS – of course I cant do everything like washing of the dishes sef and Bianca does it…and Kenneth shines their school shoes, Athena pulls out everything and puts it in the laundry bin…hehehehe and scatters her toys…and gives me a kiss if mommy is already tired. Sef makes the best coffee. And he cooks diner if eat at home. And don’t push yourself too hard…our clothes are laundered by clothes at work….hehehe plugging ito.
- VITAMINS – take your vitamins, with all the pollution and virus in the air we need this…love yourself. Health is wealth. No matter how hard we work if we don’t take care of ourselves it would be useless in the end.
- PRAY – once we are all inside the car sef leads the prayer…no matter how tired I am it lifts up my spirit to see him leading the prayer. And DON’T FORGET TO COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS.
- HUG, KISS – don’t forget to hug and kiss your kids before sending them out for school and give words of encouragement…like do your best ok!...take care of yourself…etc…my kids would return it wth a smile if they need it…but if not they would just nod their heads…
- EAT BREAKFAST – me, sef and Athena eats breakfast at sampaloc with my parents…also time to make kwentuhan since we arrive there at 7:30 I have all the time till 9am to do my phonecalls…thanks to majic jack unlimited longdistance calls…I also give Athena a bath before 9am.
- CHECK ALL ASSIGNMENT NOTEBOOKS BEFORE GOING HOME – I hope the teachers of the kids would be more kind…they should ask the kids to buy it over the weekend.
- EAT DINNER TOGETHER- we sometimes eat at sampaloc if mama cooks..thanks sa gulay! Sometimes eat out or sometimes just delivered at home or luto ni sef…whatever…importante eat together.
- HAVE A NAP- I usually sleep on our way home if Athena is already asleep on my lap while sef is driving…I need all the energy for the kids assignments and so I can change them and wipe them and carry them to bed if they are already asleep…naku sinasadya na nila para mag pababy.
- SLEEP EARLY- I sleep after my favorite teleserye betty la fea. After a full and looong day i don’t have problems like insomia and of course you should not think of any problems before going to bed. Don’t forget to say you prayers.
- DO THE GROCERY- BUY ONLY WHAT YOU NEED WHAT YOU WANT this part is very hard...hehehehe
